Patrick Kane Ties Mike Modano as Top-Scoring American-Born Player in NHL History

In a historic NHL moment, Patrick Kane of the Detroit Red Wings has officially tied Mike Modano as the highest-scoring American-born player in league history, marking a milestone in one of hockey’s most distinguished careers.

The achievement came during Detroit’s game against the Los Angeles Kings, where Kane recorded an assist on a goal by Alex DeBrincat, his 1,374th career point bringing him level with Modano’s long-standing record.

At 37 years old, Kane reached the milestone with a storied resume that speaks volumes about his longevity and consistency in the NHL. The veteran forward, who has also reached 500 career goals, joins an elite group of American players and cements his place among the all-time greats from the United States.

“Nothing really went right for us tonight,” Kane said after the game, “so it’s tough to really think about the record right now… but I’ll have a chance to move past Modano when we host the Capitals next.”

Kane’s career has been defined by both individual excellence and team success. A former three-time Stanley Cup champion with the Chicago Blackhawks, he has been one of the faces of American hockey since being selected first overall in the 2007 NHL Draft. In addition to his scoring prowess, Kane has garnered major awards including the Calder Trophy, Conn Smythe Trophy, and Hart Trophy honors that highlight both his skill and impact on the ice.

Despite Detroit’s 3–1 loss to the Kings on the night he tied the record, the achievement adds a remarkable chapter to Kane’s career and with several games still left this season, he has the opportunity to outright own the record for the most points by an American-born player in NHL history.
