Patrick Kane Makes History, Passes Mike Modano for Most NHL Points by a U.S.-Born Player

Detroit Red Wings star Patrick Kane etched his name in the NHL record books on January 30, 2026, becoming the all-time leading scorer among United States-born players in league history. Kane notched his 1,375th career NHL point with an assist against the Washington Capitals, surpassing Hall of Famer Mike Modano, who held the record for nearly two decades.

The milestone assist came in the second period of Detroit’s game at Little Caesars Arena, where Kane set the new benchmark by assisting on Ben Chiarot’s goal. The 37-year-old veteran had previously tied Modano’s record with a point against the Los Angeles Kings earlier in the week.

Kane’s achievement places him atop the leaderboard for total points (goals + assists) by a player born in the United States, a title Modano held since surpassing Phil Housley in 2007. Modano’s longstanding mark of 1,374 points was the gold standard for American NHL scorers until Kane’s historic night.

A Storied Career Culminates in U.S. Hockey History

Born and raised in Buffalo, New York, Kane has built one of the most decorated careers in modern hockey. Since entering the NHL as the first overall pick in the 2007 Draft, he has amassed three Stanley Cup championships, a Hart Trophy as league MVP, and a Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP, including his years with the Chicago Blackhawks before joining the Red Wings.

Despite fierce competition over the years, Kane’s consistency and offensive brilliance have defined him as one of the greatest American-born players in NHL history. Though Brett Hull (1,391 points) remains ahead of Kane on the overall NHL scoring list, Hull is not recognized in this category because he was born in Canada even though he represented the United States internationally.

Celebrating American Hockey Excellence

Kane’s record-setting night stands as a milestone not just for his own legacy but for the broader growth of American hockey talent. Passing a legend like Mike Modano highlights both Kane’s longevity and his impact on the sport in the United States.

As the Red Wings continue their 2025-26 season, Kane’s historic achievement will be celebrated by fans and analysts alike. A testament to his elite playmaking skills and sustained excellence at the highest level of hockey.
