Ohtani Won’t Take the Mound in 2026 World Baseball Classic

Los Angeles Dodgers two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani will not take the mound for Samurai Japan in the upcoming 2026 World Baseball Classic, according to Dodgers manager Dave Roberts. Ohtani will still participate in the tournament but exclusively as a designated hitter.

A Strategic Decision Ahead of the MLB Season

Speaking at DodgerFest on January 31, Roberts confirmed that Ohtani’s choice to sit out pitching duties in the WBC was his own. The focus, Roberts explained, is on keeping Ohtani fresh and healthy as he prepares for what is expected to be a full two-way role during the 2026 MLB season.

Ohtani’s legendary impact on international baseball is undeniable, he served as both a dominant starter and clutch reliever during Japan’s 2023 championship run, even earning WBC Most Valuable Player honors. Nonetheless, now 31 years old and coming off a second major elbow surgery, the superstar is opting for a more measured approach this year.

Why Japan Still Depends on Him

While Ohtani won’t pitch in the classic, he will anchor Japan’s offense as the designated hitter, a presence that itself elevates the team’s chances. He remains one of the most feared hitters in the world, and Samurai Japan supporters will undoubtedly count on his bat in key moments.

With Ohtani’s arm spared for the regular season, Japan’s pitching staff will lean on aces like Yoshinobu Yamamoto, among others, to handle mound duties. Yamamoto who enjoyed a standout season with the Dodgers and figures to be a workhorse for Japan gives the team a formidable leader on the hill.

Balancing Health and Heroes

Ohtani’s decision reflects a broader trend in modern baseball where elite players and their clubs balance international aspirations with long-term performance goals. Having already made a triumphant return to pitching and DH duties in 2025, Ohtani and the Dodgers are prioritizing his readiness for a full MLB campaign over high-intensity spring competition.

Dodger manager Dave Roberts emphasized the team’s support for Ohtani’s choice and pointed to extra rest and thoughtful workload management as keys to his success in 2026.

World Baseball Classic Timeline

The 2026 WBC is scheduled to run from March 5-17, bringing together top talent from around the globe. As Japan defends its title, fans will still get to witness Ohtani’s brilliance at the plate even if his electric pitching arm stays in reserve.
