USA Dominates Sweden, Sets Up Olympic Gold Medal Showdown With Canada

The rivalry that defines women’s hockey is set for another historic chapter. The United States delivered a commanding performance in the semifinal round of the 2026 Winter Olympics, shutting out Sweden 5–0 to punch its ticket to the gold medal game, where longtime rival Canada awaits.

USA Overpowers Sweden in Semifinal

Team USA showcased elite speed, structure, and depth in a dominant victory over Sweden. The Americans controlled the game from start to finish, continuing a tournament run that has seen them overwhelm opponents.

Goaltender Aerin Frankel stopped 21 shots to record her third shutout of the tournament, extending the United States’ remarkable defensive streak. Offensively, the breakthrough came in a decisive second-period surge when Abbey Murphy, Kendall Coyne Schofield, and Hayley Scamurra scored on three consecutive shots in just under three minutes.

Additional goals from Cayla Barnes and Taylor Heise sealed the emphatic win as the United States improved to a perfect tournament record while outscoring opponents by a massive margin.

A Historic Rivalry Renewed

The victory sets up a seventh Olympic gold-medal clash between the sport’s two dominant nations. The United States and Canada, continuing a rivalry that has defined women’s hockey since its Olympic debut in 1998.

Canada advanced with a narrow 2–1 win over Switzerland behind two goals from legendary captain Marie-Philip Poulin, who also became the all-time Olympic career goal leader in women’s hockey.

The gold medal showdown could mark the final Olympic appearance for two iconic leaders, Poulin and U.S. captain Hilary Knight adding even more emotional weight to an already historic matchup.

Team USA Chasing History

The Americans have looked nearly unstoppable throughout the tournament, remaining undefeated and rarely threatened. They have yet to trail in a game and extended a lengthy shutout streak while demonstrating elite depth and defensive structure.

If the United States captures gold, it would mark just the third time a women’s Olympic team has gone through the entire tournament without trailing, a feat previously accomplished by Canada in 2006 and 2010.

Gold Medal Game Ahead

With momentum, confidence, and dominant form on their side, Team USA now prepares for the ultimate test, a gold medal showdown against their fiercest rival. The United States defeated Canada earlier in the tournament, but as players and coaches often say, the gold medal game is a different stage entirely.

One more victory would secure Olympic glory and cement this American squad among the greatest in women’s hockey history.
