The Longest Winning Streaks in Professional Sports History

Winning even a single game at the professional level is difficult. But occasionally a team or athlete catches fire and strings together victory after victory, creating legendary winning streaks that become part of sports history. From basketball dynasties to baseball surges and individual dominance, here are some of the most remarkable winning streaks ever recorded in professional sports.

The 1971–72 Los Angeles Lakers — 33 Straight Wins

The longest winning streak in NBA history belongs to the Los Angeles Lakers during the 1971–72 season.

Led by legends Wilt Chamberlain, Jerry West, and Gail Goodrich, the Lakers won 33 consecutive games between November 1971 and January 1972.

The streak helped propel the team to a 69–13 record, which was an NBA record at the time. They went on to capture the 1972 NBA Championship, cementing the streak as one of the greatest runs in basketball history.

The 1916 New York Giants — 26 Straight Wins

In Major League Baseball, the longest winning streak belongs to the New York Giants (now the San Francisco Giants).

During the 1916 season, the Giants won 26 consecutive games, a record that still stands more than a century later.

The streak included a stretch where the Giants dominated opponents for nearly a month. Despite the incredible run, the team ultimately finished second in the National League that season.

The 2017 Cleveland Guardians — 22 Straight Wins

One of the most memorable streaks in modern baseball came from the Cleveland Guardians.

In September 2017, Cleveland won 22 straight games, the longest winning streak in the American League in over 100 years.

Powered by stars like José Ramírez and Francisco Lindor, the team dominated opponents during the run and finished the season with 102 wins.

The 1992–93 Pittsburgh Penguins — 17 Straight Wins

Hockey has also seen some impressive streaks, but the longest in NHL history belongs to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

During the 1992–93 season, the Penguins won 17 consecutive games, setting the NHL record.

The team featured several superstars including:

  • Mario Lemieux
  • Jaromir Jagr
  • Ron Francis

The Penguins were one of the most explosive teams in hockey history, though their incredible streak ended before the Stanley Cup playoffs.

The Miami Heat — 27 Straight Wins

Another iconic NBA run came from the Miami Heat during the 2012–13 season.

With a superstar lineup led by LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh, Miami won 27 straight games, the second-longest streak in NBA history.

The Heat finished the season 66–16 and went on to win the 2013 NBA Championship.

The 2002 Oakland Athletics — 20 Straight Wins

The Oakland Athletics produced one of baseball’s most famous streaks during the “Moneyball” era.

In 2002, Oakland won 20 consecutive games, highlighted by a dramatic comeback victory against the Kansas City Royals to clinch the streak.

The run became widely known after it was featured in the book and film Moneyball, starring Billy Beane.

Jahangir Khan — 555 Consecutive Wins

While team streaks often dominate headlines, the most astonishing winning streak in professional sports belongs to squash legend Jahangir Khan.

Between 1981 and 1986, Khan won 555 consecutive matches, a record that many consider the greatest winning streak in any professional sport.

His dominance during that period helped make him one of the greatest squash players in history.

Why Winning Streaks Are So Rare

At the highest levels of competition, teams and athletes are closely matched in talent. Injuries, fatigue, travel, and simple randomness all make long winning streaks extremely difficult to sustain.

That’s why when a team rattles off 20 or even 30 victories in a row, it becomes a defining moment in sports history.

From basketball dynasties to baseball surges and individual brilliance, these streaks remind fans just how extraordinary dominance in sports can be.
