Blue Devils Reclaim Top Spot: What Duke’s No. 1 Ranking Means for March
The Duke Blue Devils have surged back to the top of the Associated Press men’s college basketball poll, reclaiming the No. 1 ranking following a crucial victory over the previously top-ranked Michigan Wolverines on Saturday night.
Duke (25-2) moved up two spots in the latest poll released Monday, earning 56 of 61 first-place votes and marking the program’s 148th appearance at No. 1 the most in AP poll history.
The leap to the top spot followed a hard-fought 68-63 win in Washington, D.C., over No. 1 Michigan. Freshman Cameron Boozer led the way with 18 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists, helping Duke topple one of the nation’s premier teams and end Michigan’s short stay at No. 1.
That victory was a marquee matchup between two of college basketball’s elite, coming hours after the NCAA selection committee released its preliminary top 16 seeds for the upcoming NCAA Tournament. Duke’s résumé now includes a national-best 12 Quadrant 1 wins along with nine victories over teams ranked in the AP Top 25, giving them strong momentum heading into the season’s final stretch.
The top of the poll reflected the shakeup from last weekend’s results:
- No. 1 – Duke (25-2) jumped up after the key road win.
- No. 2 – Arizona climbed after a pair of important wins, including a road victory at Houston.
- No. 3 – Michigan slipped after its lone loss of the season.
- No. 4 – Iowa State and No. 5 – Houston rounded out the top five.
Meanwhile, other notable movements included Florida jumping into the top 10 and Alabama making a significant rise in the rankings following recent wins.
For Duke, returning to the top of the AP poll is a significant statement as the Blue Devils seek to solidify their positioning for March Madness. Under fourth-year coach Jon Scheyer, Duke has demonstrated consistency and toughness throughout the season, overcoming strong competition across multiple conferences.
With just a handful of regular-season games remaining, college basketball fans will be watching closely to see how Duke maintains its perch and whether this version of the Blue Devils can carry its top ranking deep into the postseason.
