Chiefs Admit They’re “Prepared” for Travis Kelce Retirement — Is the End Near?

The Kansas City Chiefs are taking a cautious and strategic approach to one of the biggest questions of their 2026 offseason: the future of star tight end Travis Kelce.

Kelce, who has spent his entire career in Kansas City and is widely regarded as one of the greatest tight ends in NFL history, remains undecided about whether he will play in 2026 or retire from the league and the Chiefs are ready for either outcome.

At the NFL Scouting Combine, Chiefs general manager Brett Veach confirmed that the franchise has been having “positive” discussions with Kelce and his representatives about his future, but has also prepared contingency plans in case the 36-year-old decides to hang up his cleats.

“We’ve kind of prepared for either scenario,” Veach said, stressing that the team wants to be flexible in its offseason planning and roster construction. “We’re trying to position ourselves so that either way we have a plan moving forward.”

The Chiefs’ patience reflects both an appreciation for Kelce’s extraordinary career, highlighted by three Super Bowl victories and an understanding of the unique circumstances he faces this offseason. Kelce’s contract is set to expire in March, and discussions around retirement have emerged amid the franchise’s first losing season in years and personal changes in Kelce’s life, including his upcoming marriage.

Head coach Andy Reid has likewise spoken about ongoing communication with Kelce, describing the dialogue as constructive and expressing a desire to see the veteran back on the field.

Kelce has been one of the most consistent playmakers in the NFL over the past decade, even as his numbers dipped slightly during the Chiefs’ disappointing 2025 season. Last year he recorded 851 receiving yards and five touchdown, still strong figures, but his lowest reception total since 2015.

For the Chiefs, the looming decision is more than an emotional one. Kelce’s status affects the team’s salary cap planning and depth chart at tight end, where backup Noah Gray is now an unrestricted free agent and emerging candidates would be expected to see larger roles if Kelce opts to retire.

Despite the uncertainty, the Chiefs are making it clear that they respect Kelce’s process and are not rushing him. Veach emphasized that there’s plenty of dialogue between the organization and Kelce’s camp as both sides chart the next steps.

Whether Kelce decides to return for what could be his 14th NFL season or opts to step away from the game, one thing is certain: the Chiefs are preparing for life either with or without the future Hall of Famer.
