Guardians Finalizing Massive Contract Extension With Star Third Baseman José Ramírez
The Cleveland Guardians are set to lock up one of baseball’s most consistent hitters for the long term, with reports indicating that seven-time All-Star third baseman José Ramírez is finalizing a huge contract extension that will keep him in Cleveland through the 2032 season.
According to multiple outlets, the extension is a restructured seven year deal worth approximately $175 million, that adds four years to the 33 year old’s current contract and includes roughly $70 million in deferred money.
A Franchise Cornerstone Locked In
Ramírez, who has spent his entire 13-year major league career with the Guardians, already had three years and $69 million remaining on a previous extension signed in 2022. The new deal folds that existing contract into a larger agreement that now runs through age 40 in 2032.
The extension reportedly includes a no-trade clause, giving Ramírez full control over his future and performance bonuses tied to MVP voting finishes and award achievements.
Why This Matters to Cleveland
Ramírez has been the face of the Guardians for years, earning seven All-Star selections, six Silver Slugger awards and multiple top-10 MVP finishes throughout his career. In 2025, he posted a .283 batting average with 30 home runs, 85 RBIs and a career-high 44 stolen bases in 158 games.
He also ranks near the top of Guardians’ franchise history in key categories:
- Second in home runs (285) behind Jim Thome
- Second in stolen bases (287) behind Kenny Lofton
- Near the top in games played and other offensive metrics
By keeping Ramírez under contract for years to come, Cleveland ensures continuity in its lineup and solid leadership for younger players as the club continues to chase postseason success.
A Loyal Career with One Team
Ramírez’s connection to Cleveland runs deep. He joined the organization in 2009 as an international signee and has been a fixture in the Guardians’ lineup ever since. Despite opportunities that may have arisen elsewhere, he has repeatedly expressed a desire to spend his entire career with Cleveland, a sentiment that appears to be realized with this new extension.
With Spring Training just weeks away, Guardians fans can now look forward to watching one of the franchise’s all-time greats continue to anchor the club for years to come.
