Kyle Busch Wins First Daytona 500 Pole, Eyes Long-Awaited Victory at NASCAR’s Biggest Race

Kyle Busch is in prime position to chase the one victory that has eluded him throughout his legendary NASCAR career.

The two-time Cup Series champion captured his first career Daytona 500 pole, earning the top starting spot for Sunday’s “Great American Race” at Daytona International Speedway and putting himself in position to finally conquer NASCAR’s biggest stage.

A Breakthrough Moment for Busch

Busch secured the pole with a blazing lap of 183.925 mph, marking a major milestone for a driver who has experienced both incredible success and frustrating near-misses at Daytona.

Despite his Hall of Fame-level career, Busch enters this year’s race 0-for-20 in the Daytona 500, with his best finish coming in 2019 when he placed second.

“Being able to qualify on my first pole for the Daytona 500, that’s pretty special,” Busch said after the run.

No driver has ever won their first Daytona 500 after failing in their first 20 attempts, a statistic Busch now hopes to rewrite.

Fresh Start with Richard Childress Racing

Busch’s pole run continues a strong stretch for Richard Childress Racing, the team he joined ahead of the 2023 season. While his tenure has included ups and downs, Busch has still recorded three victories with the team, all during his first season.

He enters the new campaign riding a lengthy winless streak but with renewed optimism under new crew chief Jim Pohlman, who previously guided Justin Allgaier to a NASCAR Xfinity Series championship.

The achievement also follows a celebratory period for the Busch family, with older brother Kurt Busch recently inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

Daytona 500 Field Taking Shape

Chase Briscoe qualified second to join Busch on the front row, while the full starting order will be finalized following the qualifying races.

Seven-time NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson has also secured a spot in the field under a provisional rule, adding even more star power to this year’s race.

Young drivers Corey Heim and Justin Allgaier also earned entry through time trials, with Heim set to make his Daytona 500 debut.

The One Victory Missing From Busch’s Legacy

Few drivers in NASCAR history have accomplished more than Kyle Busch ever has, with multiple championships, dozens of wins, and dominance across multiple series. Yet the Daytona 500 remains the one crown jewel missing from his resume.

With the pole position secured, Busch now has his best opportunity in years to finally capture the sport’s most prestigious race and cement his legacy among NASCAR’s all-time greats.

All eyes now turn to Sunday, where history could be waiting at Daytona.
