Mike McCarthy Makes His Position on Aaron Rodgers’ Future Crystal Clear

New Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy didn’t dodge the biggest question at his introductory press conference, he spelled out exactly how he feels about Aaron Rodgers’ future with the team.

Addressing reporters for the first time since being hired, McCarthy was asked if he would want Rodgers back as the Steelers’ starting quarterback in 2026. His response was simple and supportive.

“Definitely. I don’t see why you wouldn’t.”

McCarthy’s clarity signals strong interest in keeping the veteran star under center, but he also acknowledged that Rodgers, now 42 may need time to reflect before making a decision about his future. McCarthy explained that players at this stage of their careers often benefit from a break to “decompress” after the emotional grind of a long NFL season.

A Reunion With History

The potential Rodgers-McCarthy reunion carries considerable weight. The two enjoyed a long partnership in Green Bay from 2006 to 2018, including a Super Bowl XLV victory, and McCarthy has publicly praised Rodgers’ play during the 2025 season with Pittsburgh.

Rodgers joined the Steelers last season on a one-year deal and led the team to an AFC North title, throwing over 3,300 yards and 24 touchdowns in the regular season. Despite a disappointing playoff loss, his performance reaffirmed his ability to play at a high level late into his career.

While Rodgers has not yet announced whether he plans to return or retire, McCarthy’s comments make it clear that if the quarterback does choose to keep playing, he would be welcomed with open arms in Pittsburgh. McCarthy also confirmed he has already spoken directly with Rodgers about the situation.

Looking Ahead: Building the Steelers’ QB Room

Although McCarthy’s preference is evident, he stressed that the decision ultimately lies with Rodgers. In the meantime, he expressed excitement about working with other quarterbacks on the roster, including sixth-round draft pick Will Howard and veteran Mason Rudolph if Rodgers opts not to return.

The Steelers now face a pivotal offseason. Rodgers’ choice could shape Pittsburgh’s plans at the most important position in football, while McCarthy’s presence brings a new chapter to a franchise eager to return to contender status.
