The Dream Return: Newell’s Old Boys Hope to Bring Messi Home in 2027

Newell’s Old Boys are actively pursuing a high-profile project to bring Lionel Messi back to the club in 2027, according to comments from the club’s vice president. Messi’s boyhood side, based in Rosario, Argentina, is in early discussions with the Argentine superstar’s representatives about a potential return that would captivate fans across the country.

Juan Manuel Medina, vice president of Newell’s Old Boys, confirmed to Argentine media outlet TN that the club aims to have Messi wear the famous red and black shirt in the first half of 2027. While nothing has been formally agreed, Medina described the initiative as more than a typical transfer move — it is “a project for the city of Rosario, the province, and Argentine football.”

The Emotional Homecoming Narrative

Messi, who joined Newell’s youth academy as a child before moving to Europe at age 13, has long expressed a desire to one day return to his roots. His affinity for the club is well documented, and his childhood dream of playing for Newell’s professionally has been repeated throughout his career. The club’s Estadio Marcelo Bielsa even features a stand named in his honour.

However, logistical challenges remain. Medina acknowledged that the feasibility of Messi’s return hinges on Newell’s ability to present a compelling professional project, including upgrades to infrastructure and a competitive sporting environment capable of meeting the demands of a player of Messi’s calibre.

Messi’s Current Situation

Currently, Messi is under contract with Inter Miami, having joined the MLS club in July 2023 and recently extending his deal through the end of the 2028 MLS season. His tenure in North America has been highly successful, highlighted by multiple trophies and individual accolades.

At 38 years old, Messi also remains a central figure for Argentina’s national team as they prepare for the upcoming World Cup, where he is expected to play a leading role, though he has yet to publicly confirm his participation.

What This Could Mean for Argentine Football

A Messi return to Argentina would be one of the most significant moments in South American football history. Not only would it energize Newell’s supporters, but it could also reinvigorate local interest in the domestic league and have far-reaching commercial and cultural implications. For Nepal’s Old Boys, the initiative reflects a broader ambition to elevate the club’s status on both the domestic and international stage.
