“They Have All the Talent in the World — So Why Does Nobody Trust Them to Win the NBA Finals?” — Fans Question One Superstar Duo

On paper, the Philadelphia 76ers should be one of the safest championship picks in basketball.

They have an MVP-calibre superstar.

They have one of the league’s fastest-rising guards.

They have expectations, talent, experience, and a fan base desperate for a title.

So why does it feel like so few people actually trust them?

That’s the question following the 76ers into another season filled with enormous expectations.

Because despite having Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, a growing number of NBA fans remain surprisingly sceptical about Philadelphia’s championship chances.

The strange thing is that the doubt isn’t really about talent.

Nobody questions that.

Embiid remains one of the most dominant players in basketball. When healthy, he can control games offensively, overwhelm opponents physically, and produce numbers that few players in league history have been capable of matching.

Maxey has become exactly the kind of partner every superstar wants. He’s explosive, dynamic, capable of creating his own offence, and continuing to improve almost every season.

Most franchises would love to build around a duo like that.

Yet when fans discuss NBA Finals favourites, Philadelphia often feels like an afterthought compared to some of the other contenders.

There’s a reason for that.

Actually, there are several.

The biggest concern starts with health.

Every championship conversation involving the 76ers eventually returns to the same question.

Can Joel Embiid stay healthy when it matters most?

It’s an uncomfortable topic, but it’s impossible to avoid.

The regular season has rarely been the issue. Philadelphia consistently wins games. Embiid consistently performs at an elite level.

The real challenge arrives in the spring.

Too often, injuries, physical limitations, or unfortunate timing have prevented the team from entering the playoffs at full strength.

That’s created a reputation that’s difficult to shake.

Fans aren’t necessarily doubting Embiid’s greatness.

They’re doubting whether the Sixers can reach May and June with everything intact.

Until that changes, the scepticism will remain.

The pressure on Maxey has grown as well.

What makes Philadelphia fascinating is that he is no longer viewed as a promising young player.

He’s viewed as a star.

That’s a very different standard.

The league knows what Maxey can do now. Opposing coaches prepare for him accordingly. Expectations have skyrocketed.

The good news for Philadelphia is that he appears capable of handling those expectations.

The bad news is that contenders don’t get judged by potential.

They get judged by results.

That’s where the frustration surrounding the franchise comes from.

Every year begins with optimism.

Every year features impressive stretches.

Every year includes moments where Philadelphia looks capable of beating anybody.

And yet fans continue waiting for the breakthrough.

That’s what makes this season so important.

The excuses are starting to disappear.

NBA supporters have watched enough regular-season success to know the Sixers are good.

Nobody needs further proof of that.

The question now is whether they’re great.

Can they survive multiple playoff rounds?

Can they beat elite competition consistently?

Can they finally reach the Finals?

Those are the questions defining the season before it even begins.

What’s particularly frustrating for 76ers fans is that the path isn’t impossible.

There are flaws elsewhere among the league’s contenders.

The NBA isn’t dominated by one unbeatable superteam.

Opportunities exist.

That’s why expectations remain so high.

The talent is simply too obvious to ignore.

When Embiid is healthy and engaged, he can be the best player on the floor against virtually anybody.

When Maxey gets rolling, few guards are more difficult to defend in transition or isolation situations.

Together, they give Philadelphia something every contender needs.

Star power.

Championships are often won by players capable of taking over a series.

The Sixers have two players who can do exactly that.

So why doesn’t everybody trust them?

Because trust is earned.

And right now, many fans still need proof.

They need proof that Embiid can stay healthy.

They need proof that the roster can withstand playoff pressure.

Most importantly, they need proof that Philadelphia can deliver when the stakes are highest.

That’s the challenge waiting for this team.

Nobody doubts the talent.

Nobody doubts the potential.

Nobody doubts the ceiling.

The doubts exist because of everything that’s happened before.

This franchise has spent years being labelled a contender.

Now it has to prove it can become a champion.

And until that happens, the 76ers will carry a strange reputation.

They may have one of the most talented superstar duos in basketball.

But they’ll also remain one of the least trusted championship contenders in the league.

At least until they finally give fans a reason to believe.
